Proof That Beauty Comes From Within: Rescue Puppy with Autoimmune Disease

One dog is demonstrating that beauty comes in many forms and sizes and extends beyond what the eye can see. Phoenix is a dog with a great soul, but he isn't given the opportunity to display it very frequently because so many people are put off by his physical looks. He simply wants to be loved, just like any dog.

Phoenix's tale started more than a year ago when he was left as a stray. Every time someone saw him wandering the streets looking for food, he drew attention. Any potential assistance, however, vanished as soon as anyone got a better look at Phoenix's face. Sadly, this led to numerous others calling him "freakish" or "horrifying." Fortunately, there were some who were more than willing to lend him a helping hand despite his appearance.

When the Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue in Oklahoma received a call about the sad puppy, they didn't think twice about sending rescuers to get him. They promised to assist him the same way they would any other canine, regardless of his appearance.

Phoenix had clearly been someone's pet before the rescue team came across him. It was also evident, given his state of neglect, that his prior owners had not taken any steps to ensure he received the care he required.

He was basically skin and bones, according to Carisa Ducharne of Skiatook Paws & Claws. His ribs were completely visible. He simply was unable to close his eyes because of his rage. His face was swollen and inflamed to the extreme.

The cause of Phoenix's unusual appearance is still a mystery to the rescue. When he was discovered, he was actually pretty outgoing around others. They can see that no matter what he has gone through in the past, it hasn't even slightly dulled his light.

Phoenix's progress to a healthy life is chronicled in frequent updates by Skiatook Paws & Claws. On social media, he has won the hearts of many, and some have even donated money to help with his increasing medical expenditures.

Family Animal Medicine has been putting up a lot of effort to assist Phoenix in any way it can. They have limited the possibilities down to Phoenix most likely having an autoimmune condition, though they are still unsure of which one. This has benefited him in part. The main piece of good news is that Phoenix has improved significantly since arriving.

He has done nothing but get better every day, according to Ducharne. "I wouldn't say this is purposeful trauma, but neglect is also abuse, and he was definitely ignored," the author said.

Also, there has been a lot of community support from dog lovers, including a few adoption offers.

Phoenix's rescue is incredibly appreciative of the kind people who have expressed interest in adopting him, but they had to post a disclaimer to inform the public that it will be some time before Phoenix is available for adoption because they are currently concentrating on getting him fully healthy.

For now, you can visit Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue's website to lend a hand if you want to contribute to Phoenix's medical expenses or to the needs of other canines.
